Fall Gardening & Pumpkin Spice Latte – A Perfect Pairing
As the leaves change color and the air begins to crisp (that means a delightful mid-80s in Atlanta this weekend), it's the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the beauty of fall. Gardening in the autumn can be a rewarding experience. It's also the ideal time to relax and unwind with a warm cup of pumpkin spice latte. So lets combine 2 fall pastimes – gardening and pumpkin spiced coffee.
Plant Parenthood: Nurturing Your Green Babies Indoors
One of my tasks is to move my tropical plants back indoors to protect them from the harsh elements of fall and winter. Moving plants indoors can be a bit of a challenge, but with a little planning and care, you can ensure that your plants thrive throughout the colder months. Here are some considerations:
1. Choose the Right Location:
Sunlight: Your plants need adequate sunlight to grow and thrive. Find a spot indoors that receives plenty of natural light.
Temperature: Most houseplants prefer temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. Avoid placing them near cold drafts or heat sources.
Humidity: Many houseplants require higher humidity levels than those found in typical homes. Consider using a humidifier or placing your plants on a pebble tray filled with water.
2. Inspect and Clean Your Plants:
Pests: Check your plants for pests like aphids, spider mites, or mealybugs. If you find any pests, treat them immediately.
Diseases: Look for signs of diseases, such as yellowing leaves or brown spots. If you notice any problems, isolate the plant and treat it accordingly.
Cleaning: Gently wipe the leaves of your plants with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.
Pruning: If necessary, prune your plants to maintain their shape and size.
3. Repot if Necessary:
Root-bound: If your plants are root-bound, repot them into larger pots. This will provide them with more space to grow.
Fresh soil: Repotting is also a good opportunity to refresh the soil. Use a well-draining potting mix that is specifically designed for indoor plants.
I had to replant 4 of my plants prior to moving them indoors. I previously moved an aloe into a larger pot. It was so leggy that I thought it might like more space. Unfortunately, it struggled to find its legs and I’m not sure that I was successful in getting the watering and sunlight schedule correct. I’ve never grown aloes before. So, now I’m trying to move it into a smaller pot so that it can get its root system under it. Will see how it fares over the winter.
4. Adjust Watering: As the days get shorter, plants require less water. I try to allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering. I will also adjust fertilizer as plants do not need as much as during the growing season.
Bulb-a-licious: Planting for Springtime Splendor
To plant bulbs, choose your favorites like tulips, daffodils, or hyacinths. Prepare well-draining soil and add compost. Plant bulbs at the correct depth, following the packaging instructions. Space them appropriately and water thoroughly after planting.
Snip and Shape: Pruning Shrubs
Trim back overgrown shrubs to promote healthy growth and improve their appearance. Prune deciduous shrubs in late winter or early spring. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Shape the shrub by removing unwanted or overgrown branches. Thin out dense growth to improve air circulation. Use clean pruning shears to make clean cuts.
Tidy Up and Tune Up Your Garden Beds
Let's get your garden ready for a springtime makeover! Start by clearing away any fallen leaves, twigs, or other debris. Give your garden beds a deep cleaning to make room for new growth. To nourish your soil, add a layer of compost or well-rotted manure. Your garden will thank you with a vibrant display of blooms! Vince also blew all of the pine straw off of the roof. We’ll also have our gutters cleaned out.
Fall Foliage and Frothy Lattes: A Perfect Pair
Imagine a cozy morning sipping a warm pumpkin spice latte while strolling through your vibrant fall garden. Spend a rewarding afternoon planting bulbs or pruning shrubs, savoring the satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot. As the sun begins to set, relax on your porch with another pumpkin spice latte, watching the golden hues paint the sky. It's the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the beauty of autumn. Cheers!
